 FROM 19TH TO 25TH MARCH 2007

What is the European Week of Media and Diversity all about? The European society is becoming more and more multicultural and diverse, but the media do not fully and fairly reflect the current situation. The annual European Week of Media and Diversity was launched in 2003 to highlight the necessity of more diversity in the media and to start new and constructive dialogue between media professionals, NGO’s and minority audiences. During the last three years, this initiative has become a platform to draw attention to the resolutions and recommendations of national bodies and to the presentation of efforts made by NGOs in order to improve the current situation.

Who are the partners? They are NGO’s, unions of journalists, schools of journalism, research institutes, media education and vocational training organisations, diversity managers from public broadcasters, program makers, media-watch organizations, workers’ unions and community media from across all Europe.

Why an European Week of Media and Diversity? To achieve diversity in the media will bring positive change to both the minority and diverse groups and to the media industry.

In a long term perspective, those changes mean:

  • A more cohesive European society, where a voice is given to all citizens;
  • More quality in journalism and program making;
  • Economic success for the media, that will finally met the expectations of the minority audiences.

Do you want to be part of the European week 2007? This year’s edition of the European Week of Media and Diversity will focus on the theme “Equal Opportunities for All!” . If your organization wants to join the Week by staging a national or local event, we can provide you with the logo and other communication tools, free advertising space via our websites and mailing lists, and support to put you in touch with peers working in the same area. You can join the Week by proposing your own initiatives or using one of the formats we propose in the European Week handbook (available on request)
